My GP prescribed amytriptiline to help with pain/discomfort at night. I take 20 mgs, and along with a couple of painkillers I usually manage to get a reasonable amount of sleep most nights. I`ve been on them for a good while now, but never feel unduly drowsy the next day. I do normally take mine at about 8 pm, though sometimes it`s a bit later. They`ve never left me feeling as if I wasn`t "in control," and I haven`t had any side effects from them. I think there are quite a few forum folk taking amytriptiline.

This is the one drug I would most hate to give up. It hs helped hugely with pain in the night and also makes me sleepy 2 hours after I take them. I started on 1 x 25mg tablet and moved up to 2 and then 3. I've been on the 75mg for over a year now. It is supposed to have some anti-depressant quality at this dose too, which is fine by me.

I think at the lower starting dose you would be fine Caz. I can certainly still be woken up when I need to - by wretched sons who forget to take their keys, cats digging their way into the bedroom and parents ringing, so I'm sure you would still feel in control. I would definitely say to give it a go Caz. You will know after a couple of nights if it helps. If it doesn't, or you don't like it, you can stop.

Let us know how you get on xx Ailsa

Hello Caz

I have been on Amitryp for nearly 3 yrs I should think now. As ailsa says
it has helped me immensly for pain and sleeping at night. Yes it does make
you relax hence the reason your nerves are'nt jumping. I take 3 or 4 tablets
and yes take mine about hour half before I intend to go to bed. I used to
sleep awful at night so the Amitryp has made a good difference to me. If you
have a good nights sleep you can face the day better I believe.

Don't worry and give it a try just to see how you get on. I do find I take a
glass of water to bed with me as if I wake it does give me a dry mouth(thats
a side effect)

Good luck

Rose

Hi Caz, I have fibromyalgia too, and take mtx hydroxy and amtitriptyline. I am on 25mg, which seems to work for me, although I know lots of people who are on a higher dose. I find that they do relax you and although it does cause a dry mouth, its definitely worth it. I dont think you need worry about not being in control, or about not being able to wake when needed. I am a very light sleeper, and wake very easily, but at least its not due to pain. Give them a go, you can but try!!!Smile

Hi Caz

I too take them at night to help with pain and sleep. I started on 10mg which seemed to do the trick until recently so have now increased to 20mg. They do work well and at least you get a reasonable night's sleep! It concerns me that I might get 'used' to them and struggle to do without them. But for now they're doing what's needed and that's all I'm bothered about for the moment. Must admit though I seem to have been taking them incorrectly ... perhaps in future I'll take them a while before going to bed instead of when I'm sat in bed!

Definitely worth trying Caz,

Hi Caz, I too have been taking Amiwatsit for three years and have found it a great benefit. I take it two hours before I go to bed. I also take MTX 20mg and Hydroxychloraqine 200mg twice daily. Give it a go Caz I think you will be glad that you have. It's meant to be a great help with the Fibromyalgia. I've just started taking gabapentin along with the Ami and finding that a help too. Good luck.Glenys.

Hi, Caz,
Have been on Amitriptyline for over 10 years, on different doses at times, even getting it down to 10mg only on a night before this arthritis set in. Was initially put on it for migraine, but as my neck is affected and causes pain into my head, now back to 30mg a night. Along with this I take Methotrexate 25mg on a weekly basis, Sulphasalazine and Hydroxychloroquine on a daily basis and manage pain mainly by Paracetamol now. I mention this as if like me you may worry about adding another medication in the mix. However I would definately panic if I could not take these each night, as I know the pain I will be in the next day without them.
Hope this helps.

I've been on them too, 25mg tablet. I take mine 7/8pm and get a good sleep most nights. They sometimes make you a bit sleepy in the morning but after about 2 weeks you get used to them.

I take a drink up to bed also as they do give you a dry mouth.

Good luck and give them a try.

Love Shirley x
